8 Writers, 8 Weeks: Workshop in Poetry
& Flash Prose
This workshop is designed for writers who want to understand more deeply their own gifts and challenges and use that knowledge to revise their work. Writers of poems and short-short prose, and those who would like to experiment in each form, are welcome.
If you are accustomed to traditional workshop “critique,” be prepared to experience something different. We’ll practice revising “upside-down,” learning to ask questions of our own work and the work of our colleagues rather than making pronouncements about how each writer should revise.
We will focus on elements of craft and revision as they pertain to the mission of each writer most certainly voice, language and structure and look at examples of poems and flash prose in their draft and revised forms. I will propose alternative ways of looking at revision, and we’ll practice these in the workshop meetings.
During the eight-week period, I will offer a one-on-one meeting with each writer.
In this place of collaborative learning, where some of us write poetry and some short prose, we’ll learn from artists who are doing something different than we are and let their practices influence our work.
We will spend some of our time together writing as well as send work to each other in advance of each meeting. For those who would like to write to an assignment, I will assign short pieces each week; however, each writer has the option to continue work on a project of her own devising regardless of any assignment.
At the end of 8 weeks, we’ll invite friends & colleagues to join us in a public reading.
I do not screen writers for this workshop. I invite you to self-select by considering the place of writing in your life and whether you are writing on a regular basis or committed to a re-start. The number of writers for this particular workshop will be limited to 8.
