Writing & Performing the Monologue
for poets, playwrights, storytellers,
fiction writers, & experimenters
If you would like to advance the way you shape & focus your ideas
& articulate them to an audience, this workshop is for you.
Accessing an interior life, and giving voice to that life in a way an audience can believe in it, is the art of monologue. In this workshop you will read, listen to & practice three major types of monologues; write, write, write; revise your monologue with guidance; rehearse; and perform your work.
Monologues are written for one speaker. Like many terms about theater and literature, it`s from Greek: monos, “single, alone” + logos, “speech, word” = speaking alone.
A monologue can stand alone or become part of a larger work. Monologues generally take one of three forms: speaker addressing another person or character; speaker unraveling the thoughts of her own mind to herself; speaker addressing an audience. All three can be deployed as poetry in the form of a dramatic monologue; as theater (or both); as a character`s speech or thought in fiction; and in any situation with an audience, small or large, in which you want to command attention.
In this workshop, we are aiming to craft work that will help you discover & shape source material for monologue projects now & into the future. The workshop includes:
* A breakdown of what makes a monologue compelling to an audience
* Intensive free writing to carefully selected prompts
* Guidance on sculpting your work & defining the voice of your piece
* Guided rehearsal & public performance
3 workshop meetings, rehearsal & a public performance:
Workshop meets Saturdays, 10 AM – 1 PM & Saturday evening performance. 2018 Dates TBD.
